Dear
Gale,
I am
sorry to hear about your situation. It is extremely unusual for a Bio-eye
hydroxyapatite implant to be removed, especially if it is vascularized.
However, yours must have been vascularized because otherwise peg placement is
not recommended.
The
Medpor implant is a porous polyethylene plastic implant. It is considered a
less desirable implant material because it is synthetic. Its only current
advantage is that it is less costly than the Bio-eye implant. Most patients
and in some cases ophthalmologist are not aware that the pores in the Medpor
implant are not all interconnected as they are in the Bio-eye implant and
Medpor does not completely vascularize. Therefore, I do not believe it
is appropriate to place a peg in it.
The
hydroxyapatite is the best material available today because it is a natural
material in the body.
I would
recommend that you have it has a secondary implant with your muscles attached
to it to give you the best movement.
Best
regards,
Art
